PHILIPS CARLIN

Philips Carlin was a principal announcer and program director for WEAF in New York when NBC purchased the station in 1926. Along with Graham McNamee, he became one of NBC's principal announcers in its early days, often teaming up with McNamee on sports broadcasts. Their voices were so similar that many listeners couldn't tell them apart. In this 1930 photo, he is announcing the arrival of the Graf Zeppelin from atop the mooring mast in Lakehurst, NJ.

In 1927, he originated the concept of the NBC chimes. In the 1930's, he transitioned from announcing to the executive offices, becoming program manager of the NBC Red Network. He was the Vice President of Programming for the Mutual Network from 1944 to 1949, and later created some of TV's early game shows. He retired in 1964 and died in 1977.
