Selected audio recordings from San Francisco radio's golden era:
  • INTERVIEWS:

Earliest Recordings of Radio Broadcasting in the United States:

National Defense Test Day - September 12, 1924.  Broadcast by AT&T hookup over 18 stations.
One of the very first programs broadcast over a network of stations.
Transcribed by Art Shifrin from original Western Electric disks:

NBC "Light's Golden Jubilee" was a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Thomas Edison's incandescent light bulb, held in Detroit on October 21, 1929, just days before the stock market crash of 1929.  The Jubilee also served as the dedication of Henry Ford's Greenfield Village, originally known as the Thomas Edison Institute.  NBC announcers Graham McNamee and Philips Carlin broadcast live from this gala event. - October 21, 1929.

Two NBC network programs - "The GE Radio Hour" with Walter Damrosch, and the beginning of "The Lucky Strike Hour";  recorded at WGY in Schenectady on film using the GE Pallophotophone method.  March 29, 1929.

This short recording of a 1929 WGY station break includes the original 7-note NBC Chimes, which were heard on the network in its early years. The chimes were shortened to the familiar 3-note version about 1929-30.
